KFF: One Fifth of U.S. Hispanics are Uninsured
According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, the 19% of the total U.S. population who are Hispanic face a number of barriers to health: 14% of Hispanics live in a limited English-speaking household; 17% have a household income below the poverty line compared to 10% of the white population; 16% of Hispanic children and 13% of Hispanic adults report food insecurity, compared to 7% of white children and 6% of white adults. Overall, 20% of Hispanics have no health insurance, but this varies widely by national origin: 40% of Hondurans, 35% of Guatemalans, 26% of Salvadorans, 9% of other South Americans, and 8% of Spaniards are uninsured. By comparison, just 8% of whites are uninsured.
